AI Powered Timetables Promise a Smoother Ride for Greater Glasgow

Punctuality on Glasgow’s buses has improved by 8.5 per cent since First Bus started handing the timetable over to artificial intelligence. That figure covers more than 60 routes tweaked using AI-powered scheduling software, which analyses live traffic data and historical patterns to build timetables that reflect how the city actually moves — or crawls — during the day. It is an approach that appears to be working, and First is betting on it again.

Stagecoach Confirms Its Largest Ever Order of Electric Vehicles

Stagecoach, the UK's biggest coach and bus operator, is investing big in its largest electric bus order yet: a total of 170 fully electric vehicles for Stockport. The fleet consists of 150 double decker and 20 single decker buses which are expected to be delivered in summer 2024.

Stagecoach Group

This exciting purchase comes from a £37.2m investment by Stagecoach and an additional £35.7m from Greater Manchester's successful Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) bid and £12.5m from TFGM/GMCA.

We’re pleased to say that all the buses will be fully accessible and loaded with a variety of features, including wheelchair bays, hearing induction loops, audio and visual announcement systems, and anti-slip flooring.

As well as this, Stagecoach is investing in an additional 122 new fully electric buses to be implemented across the UK within the next year. We've also already seen some success in introducing electric bus fleets in Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness and Dunfermline in Scotland, as well as in Manchester.

These big investments show that Stagecoach is taking its promise to have a zero-emission bus fleet by 2035 seriously. Not only is this great news for customers of Stockport, but it's a step in the right direction for all of the mission to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Sam Greer, Engineering Director for Stagecoach said:
“We're excited to be announcing our largest electric vehicle order to date, which will be a major step forward in improving air quality across the region.
This builds further on the investment being made by Stagecoach across the country to support the transition to a zero-emission bus fleet.”
We hope this commitment by Stagecoach serves as a leading example for the future of transport, demonstrating that buses don’t need to be a carbon intensive, unsustainable mode of transport. We look forward to the successful introduction of this fully electric fleet and all the other improvements it will bring for commuters.
