A Breath of Fresh Air: Liverpool's Hydrogen-Powered Buses Hit the Streets

The Liverpool City Region has embarked on a ground-breaking green initiative by introducing innovative hydrogen-powered buses. These state-of-the-art vehicles are designed to provide an enhanced level of service and comfort to all passengers, while drastically reducing harmful emissions.

The City Region Combined Authority has purchased 20 Alexander Dennis Enviro400FCEV hydrogen-powered double decker buses as part of its environmental efforts. The first of these buses started its public service last week (12th May) and has been making its maiden journeys, leaving from St Helens bus station bound for Liverpool ONE bus station. Drivers have undergone extensive training to ensure a smooth transition and the buses have been seen regularly on test across the region.

These cutting-edge vehicles have been introduced to align with the recent introduction of brand new class 777 trains across several lines on the Merseyrail network. Additionally, the city region is progressing towards its own ‘franchising model’ to bring the region’s buses under the highest level of public control since the 1980s.

The new hydrogen-powered buses are set to service the region’s 10A ‘green route’, which connects St Helens and Liverpool city centre via areas like Knotty Ash and Stoneycroft. This is the busiest route in the city region, and these zero-emission buses will drastically reduce pollution levels while providing a seamless journey experience for all passengers.

The technology used to power these buses involves an on-board hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electricity to power the vehicle. The fuel cell works by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air, which creates water vapor and releases energy in the form of electricity. This produces zero emissions, as the only by-product is pure water.

In addition to improved sustainability, these buses are designed with added amenities for passenger comfort. Wheelchair users and those with prams or buggies can benefit from increased capacity. Furthermore, wireless and USB phone charging, WiFi internet access, reading lights positioned above seats provide added convenience and an expansive glass roof that will allow passengers to enjoy the beautiful city skyline.

Safety is also a top priority, and these buses are equipped with camera wing mirrors. Audio and visual announcements for upcoming stops and high-definition onboard screens displaying journey progress, next stops and real-time information on onward travel connections add to the overall passenger experience.

Speaking about the new buses last year, Mayor Rotheram said:
“Our new zero-emission hydrogen buses will not only give passengers a clean, green and comfortable way to get about, but they will also act as the trailblazer in our city region’s journey to develop one of the country’s healthiest public transport networks.

“Just like our new trains, these buses have been designed and built for the needs of people in our region in mind and will be publicly owned too.

“Reforming our bus network a key part of my plan for an integrated London-style transport network that makes traveling around our region quick, cheap and reliable.”

In summary, Liverpool City Region’s hydrogen-powered buses represent a significant step forward in green transportation and passenger comfort. These innovative vehicles are part of the city’s commitment to sustainable and efficient transport, benefiting both the environment and commuters.
